McCloy Panel: Germanys’ new Global Role in Security

Project Info

Project Description

Brexit, Daesh, Refugees, Turkey, Libya and Ukraine. There is no lack of geopolitical challenges on Europe’s doorstep. At the same time, with isolationist voices rising on the right and the left of the American political spectrum, American power seems increasingly reluctant to protect the European paradise. In this growing geopolitical vacuum many observers look to Germany to take up a security leadership role.
German policy makers from Angela Merkel over Joachim Gauk and Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Ursula von der Leyen have begun to publicly react to these new challenges and expectations whether it be during the Munich security conference, through the Foreign Ministry’s much debated “review2014” or in the form the Defence Ministry’s pivotal new whitebook.
In this moment of profound change in Germany’s security policy, redefining the transatlantic relationship in general and the German American relations in particular must be on top of the agenda. To this end the German American conference should set up a panel address some of the most salient issues in this security relationship.
